Road trip cost calculator
How much will the drive cost in fuel or charging? Enter the distance, your car's real consumption and today's price, then split it between everyone in the car.
Starting values are examples; enter your own car and a current local price. Need the distance? Order your stops in the route planner (straight-line, so add 20–30% for roads) or check your maps app.
Why "+10 mpg" is not always +10 mpg
How the road trip cost is calculated
Miles and mpg: cost = distance ÷ mpg × price per gallon. Kilometres and L/100 km: cost = distance × L/100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre. For electric cars, swap in kWh and the price per kWh.
Add tolls, parking and ferries in the travel budget planner as fixed costs, together with where you will sleep.
Questions
How do I calculate the gas cost of a road trip?
Divide the distance by your car's miles per gallon to get gallons used, then multiply by the price per gallon. In litres per 100 km: distance × consumption ÷ 100 × price per litre.
What fuel economy should I use?
Use your car's real-world figure from the trip computer or your own fill-ups; official ratings are often optimistic. Motorway driving at high speed, roof boxes and heavy loads all raise consumption.
What fuel price should I use?
Check current prices along your route with a fuel-price app or the national price-reporting site where one exists. Prices vary by region and change often, so we do not pre-fill a live price.
Does it work for electric cars?
Yes. Choose Electric and enter efficiency in miles per kWh (or kWh per 100 km) and your expected price per kWh; fast chargers usually cost more than home charging.
What about tolls and parking?
They are not included; add them to the travel budget planner as fixed costs.
